Californication, dare to be an optimist

Episode 601Funny, dark and bitter sweet. Sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll and a typewriter.
This show is a constant battle between what we should be or do and what we are. I am reading this book, called “A Wrinkle in time”. A group of kids is sent to a planet, that surrendered to the great evil. People on this planet do things exactly right, exactly like everyone else, because they don’t have a mind of their own any more, they have one big mind, that thinks for every one.
We used to thinking that stuff that is not in a norm is weird or even evil, but what if the norm is the evil?
Certainly the answer is somewhere in the middle, and there isn’t one and only one right. Otherwise it wouldn’t be fun living, would it?
Californication is just about that. They take stereotypes and look into them: rock star, hippie, writer, housewife, parents, teenagers, students, teachers etc.

Hank – cute, smart, idealist. Actually he is quite a moralist, only his morals get it in trouble way too often. It is impossible not to like him, not be upset for him.
Karen – beautiful, exquisite, indecisive and has a quick temper. At first I was really fond of her, but by getting to the 7th season, she is kinda annoying.

– If I give up on you, what do I have left?
– Just the rest of your life…

Do they belong together? Is Hank right hoping? Does he even fight or just believes in “a idea of love” ?
That’s the greatest stereotype of all times: The One.
What if he or she was the one? What if there isn’t one?

I guess the idea of that other half existing even hypothetically somewhere is comforting. But I think we outgrew the idea of one thing for life. We travel, change cities, countries, continents. We change jobs, careers, religions. We are free to find out who we are and be just that.

And that’s scary. It’s easier to be the norm. But what if it’s dead boring?
I think norm serves our desire to connect, to feel related. But the thing is, there is always a bunch of people who are as “crazy” as you are for every faze of your life’s journey discovery.

Yes it hurts to leave people behind, yes it’s hard sometimes to find enough courage to follow the dreams.

– But world doesn’t need more writers
– May be not, but if you’re doing the thing you’re born to be doing, it’s good.

And that “thing you are born to be doing” may change every 5, 10, 20 years. And it’s also OK.
